Frequently Asked Questions
Jao products are not tested on animals, only us lucky humans. We use only the very best ingredients in our totally original products. Our multi-purpose products are specially formulated without dyes, petroleum or artificial fragrances. When one product does many things, we buy and consume less.
Do you offer samples of your products?
We will happily send you samples of products, but we must ask you to pay for shipping and handling. Please see our Deluxe Sample Pak on our products page.
Are your products safe for sensitive skin?
If you are sensitive to beauty products, we suggest ordering a sample pack to patch test the products on your skin. We have learned from our customers that even those with the most sensitive skin or are prone to allergic reactions have had no problems when using our products.
Are your products organic?
Our products are specially formulated with the very best ingredients. All of our products have NO parabens, sulphates, PEG’s, propylene glycol, TEA, DEA, phthalates, mineral oil, silicones or synthetic fragrance.
Whether or not to go organic was a difficult decision for a small business such as ours. Upon research, it seems the FDA does not define or regulate the term “organic,” as it applies to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products. Anyone can claim a product is “organic” if it has 95% of ingredients that are organically approved. But, what is in that extra 5%? The term “certified organic” does not mean chemical free.
In addition, the "certified organic" label would mean huge price increases. We believe our products are organic enough in that we are using all these amazing natural oils and butters. We are sourcing from great companies and know we provide a quality product that you will enjoy.
Do you test on animals?
Jao products are not tested on animals, only us lucky humans. Our multi-purpose products are specially formulated without dyes, petroleum or artifical fragrances.
Are your soy products GMO?
Many of our products use soy lecithin and we try to source all of our materials from the US. "Most of the soy grown in the US is genetically modified, so unless the label says ‘organic soy lecithin,’ it probably came from a genetically modified soybean. You know I’m not a fan of GMOs, due to the presence of potentially transferrable DNA and potentially immunogenic proteins. However, as I discussed in the section on allergies, soy lecithin contains very little soy protein, and lecithin from some sources contains no detectable protein at all. Soy lecithin also contains very little DNA, and the DNA present is usually degraded to the extent that it’s impossible to tell whether the soy is genetically modified or not. Thus, most of the risks associated with consumption of GMOs aren’t relevant for soy lecithin, and shouldn’t be cause for concern." - Chris Kesser, Health for the 21st Century
Where are your products made?
All of our products are created in our lab in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. Our products are also manufactured in the great states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Our tubes, boxes and all of our marketing materials are manufactured and printed at small businesses up and down the East Coast. We feel very strongly about supporting small businesses. Made in the USA.
Is Jao Hand Refresher made with safe ingredients? How does it work?
Our Hand Refresher is made with 65% Natural Ethyl Alcohol which kills germs safely using no bacteriostats that weaken over time and can grow resistant germs. Alcohol kills germs by drying out their cell wall. We do not use Benzalkonium Chloride or Triclosan which are bad for humans and the environment, and are known marine pollutants! Glycerin and Glyceryl Polyacrylate are humectants. They begin with natural glycerine which is a byproduct of soap and is thickened with .2% mix of Amino Methyl Propanol and Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer which are safe and have to be used together to thicken the glycerine to become a much better moisturizer. D-Panthenol is a vitamin good for healing skin. Aloe is soothing. Methyl Glucose Ether Distearate is derived from corn sugar. It is an emollient to protect the skin from the drying effects of the alcohol. Plus we have Chamomile, Calendula, Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Geranium and Sage in our boutique blend.
Is Goe Oil ok to use during pregnancy?
Goe Oil is a blend of 28 natural oils and butters. It has a large percentage of Jojoba oil in it which is the closest naturally occurring wax to mimic our skin’s sebum. While it soothes and calms dry skin we have also had many women tell us how wonderfully well it works on their stretching belly’s during pregnancy. However we always advise every pregnant mother to check with their OBGYN first.
Why is my Goe Oil too thin or separating?
This happens when it is exposed to varying temperature swings. You can make your Goe Oil go back to its thicker consistency by following these quick steps:
1 Heat a pan of water to 120F/48C.
2 Tightly cap the tube and place in the water for about 5 mins.
3 Carefully, remove from water with tongs and carefully shake to hear if it is liquid inside.
4 Caution: tube will be hot. Do not touch with bare hands.
5 Lay tube flat to cool or put in the fridge for a few minutes.
6 It will harden right up to its thicker consistency.
Why are there white flakes in my Seed Oil?
When it's cold outside, the Coconut Oil can solidify - anything below 76 degrees Fahrenheit / 25 degrees Celsius. If you allow the Seed Oil to warm to room temperature (76 degrees and above) the white specs will dissolve back into the oil.
What are the little white dots on the surface of my Bomade?
Shea Butter can crystallize when it cools. There is nothing wrong with the product This is a function of its natural properties and sometimes happens with natural ingredients.
What are the little dark spots on the surface of my Bomade?
Natural oils and butters melt and cool at different temperatures, and oxidation of the crystals may occur. There is nothing wrong with the product. This is a function of its natural properties, and sometimes happens with natural ingredients. The spots disappear when applying the product.
Jao Face Crème has oat protein. Do oats contain gluten?
We take our advice from the experts at the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center: “A large body of scientific evidence accumulated over more than 15 years has proven that oats are completely safe for the vast majority of celiac patients. Oats are not related to gluten-containing grains such as wheat, barley and rye. They don’t contain gluten, but rather proteins called avenins that are non-toxic and tolerated by most celiacs (perhaps less than 1% of celiac patients show a reaction to a large amount of oats in their diets). Oats can be in a celiac’s diet provided they are selected from sources that guarantee a lack of contamination by wheat, rye or barley.” www.cureceliacdisease.org
In addition, the article below indicates that gluten in a body care products probably won’t cause a reaction. Obviously, you know your body best and can choose whether to use body care products containing trace amounts of oat protein: the amount of oat protein in Jao Brand Face Crème is less then 2%.
“This is a personal decision that each of us can make, but science indicates that gluten in shampoo and cosmetics is not a threat to those with celiac disease– except for those that may be easily ingested, like lipstick or potentially hand lotion. Researchers have found that unless you have a deep and open wound, gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin making topical items acceptable for use. (A quick reminder: don’t forget to wash your hands after applying a gluten-containing hair or cosmetic product to avoid any unintentional ingestion.) If you have a reaction to a cosmetic or toiletry, consider an alternate culprit like an allergic reaction.” www.celiaccentral.org/myths/
Why does my new product smell different than before?
Because we only use essential oils and not synthetic fragrance, you might notice a slight fragrance variation from batch to batch. This is because the essential oils are made from plants and each growing season there are changes due to weather, moisture and sun.
